The issue of fake Internet users has been around for as long as the Internet, but it sure seems like they are really starting to proliferate. In the age of social networks and collaboration, this can be a real problem. Two recent anecdotes: 1) In one of our LinkedIn security groups, a member pointed out that the exact same phrase was used in the work experience of over 40 security professionals. A longer perusal of these “entities” showed other strange characteristics. 2) I happened to look at a lightning deal on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Avaak-SB2300-Personal-Network-Wireless/dp/B00486THVK/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top) and there are a handful of folks pointing out how the five-star reviewers have exhibited strange behaviors that make the reviews fishy.
