You think the guy from Lifelock is having a problem? What about Mrs. Hilda Schrader Whitcher? Her SSN, 078-05-1120, was printed on a sample SSN card in a wallet sold at Woolworth's circa 1938. Yes, her boss thought it would be cute to do. Since then, over 40,000 people have used it. Full story here (thanks to Rich Baich who clued me in on this.)
Broken record: publish SSNs and be done with it. The only reason this is so frustrating to people is they keep reinforcing the negatives. You can't keep an SSN secret and you shouldn't try. We should move on to another system.
