On Bias, the Wisdom of Crowds, and Philosophical Majoritarianism

Wow.

It’s one thing to claim bias or conflict of interest every single time you disagree with someone else. It’s a whole different beast when you recognize that everyone (including yourself) is biased everywhere, all the time. Hal Finney’s post is an instant classic, I kid you not.

I’ve been following the Overcoming Bias blog for some time now and had recently come to the conclusion that if you recognize that everyone is biased all the time, including yourself, there is no basis on which to form an opinion. Of course, it is my job to form an opinion anyway and I find it exceedingly difficult (and unfair) to do without quantitative objective evidence.

Btw, Hal Finney happens to work at PGP, though you wouldn’t necessarily know it by this post.

(The Wisdom of Crowds reference is simply to note that philosophical majoritarianism is rooted in some of its same principles.)
