What is the most interesting information security acquisition this month? Anytime I update my security acquistions spreadsheet I go back and look at "Google alerts" (I have one for "security" "acquires" which gives some junk but is easy enough to scroll through on my X1 search page.
It may be obvious to some that the reason I am updating is that there have been a few interesting acquisitions recently:
IBM acquires Ounce Lab
McAfee acquires MX Logic
While I was reviewing my alerts, however, I noticed one that I think is pretty interesting:
Security Innovation acquires NTRU
This is not a particularly interesting acquisition from a venture capital or investment banking perspective – these are two small niche companies. But I find it very interesting from a security solutions perspective. I am not convinced that Security Innovation, a dynamic and static application security provider of software and services, has a whole lot of short-term synergy with NTRU – a maker of toolkits and solutions for integrating encryption solutions into applications and systems.
In the long-term, however, I am completely in sync with their strategy of moving from identifying application security problems to integrating security solutions into the applications, particularly for encryption. And I don't see how we can ignore the need for trust-like (i.e. integrity and authenticity of objects) features for very much longer (though I still expect some kicking and screaming on the part of developers).
Fingers crossed here.
