Am I late to the y2k party?

Just saw a post over at Techdirt about the daylight saving time problem. Not a big deal, that, but I did cringe at one point made by Carlo:

"All the stories compare the potential for damage to the Y2K bug, which turned out to be largely overblown…"

So, let’s be clear – Y2k was likely the single biggest success story in information security history. Some of you may be giggling or even gagging at that, but that is because you don’t understand the impact of proper preparation: nothing happens.

Now, we may have overspent… who knows perhaps way too much, but it is very clear to anyone involved in the y2k projects looking at source code that there were significant changes made that would have had an impact if they weren’t changed.

One commenter named Matt provides a similar perspective:

"The only reason Y2K didn’t destroy the world so to say is because of people like me who had to find and edit tons of ancient mainframe code to prevent it from happening! Thankfully, we were able to avoid the problem, and did anybody thank us? Noooo…

Just letting you know that Y2K was only "overblown" because we were able to fix it in time…"
